Galeries Lafayette’s signage, present since its creation in 1899, plays a key role in the brand’s global influence and is intimately linked to the history of its buildings. Following the City of Paris’ decision to remove all illuminated signs from rooftops to preserve the aesthetics of emblematic monuments and squares, we designed a new railing on the fifth floor at 1-3 boulevard Haussmann in Paris. Balustrades, a strong feature of Haussmann architecture, are one of the main fantasy objects in this highly composed architecture. We reinterpreted a Haussmannian motif that distorts to create the “Galeries Lafayette” lettering, while integrating with the existing motif, thus respecting architectural continuity. We chose a sans-serif linear typography for its legibility and to anchor this railing in a contemporary language. The entire structure is made of fiber-reinforced concrete (BFHUP), to give the moldings a finer finish, and incorporates reflective glass beads on the surface to enhance visibility by day and night.
