KERLIFORNIE — Breton California

Ker, the Breton home. Kalifornie, a way of life open to the landscape. From their union comes Kerlifornie: a way of living that combines a sense of belonging with openness, local heritage with modernity.

The project highlights the qualities of the existing house by creating a dialogue between the neo-Breton architecture of the 1950s–1970s and the spirit of the Californian Case Study Houses. These two legacies share the same ambition: to invent a contemporary architecture that is generous and intimately connected to its surroundings.

Breton vernacular craftsmanship is matched by the transparency, open-plan layouts and relationship with the landscape found in Californian homes. Black tile cladding, large bay windows, protection and openness thus combine to create an architecture where regional identity and modernity reinforce one another. A house that embraces both its roots and the horizon.
